Automotive technical cleanliness failures are among the most expensive quality escapes in manufacturing. A single particle depositing on a fuel injector needle, an ABS valve seat, or an EPS gear surface during assembly is invisible to standard quality inspection and undetectable at functional test — until it reaches the customer.

VDA 19.2 exists because the automotive industry recognized that controlling component cleanliness at the point of analysis is too late. The contamination event happens during assembly, in the environment, before the component is closed.
