Wood is a natural material. Variation comes with it. The problem starts when that variation remains unknown until later in production. Timber is dried, processed, machined or graded before you discover that it was too wet, weaker than expected or contained a defect you could not see.

By then, time, energy and value have already been added. Better measurement changes the moment at which you know.

It gives you information while you can still act on it. Which timber can continue. Which piece needs a different destination. Which process needs adjustment. And which material should be taken out before more work goes into it.
