The Timber Grader MTG is a wireless handheld instrument for determining the strength and stiffness of structural timber. It gives producers, quality managers and researchers an objective way to grade both softwood and hardwood, without relying on visual assessment alone.

Visual grading can identify knots, cracks and other visible characteristics. But appearance alone cannot reliably determine the mechanical properties of a piece of timber.

With a single trigger, the instrument generates a sound wave through the timber and measures its acoustic response. Dedicated software combines this measurement with product data to determine the dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE) and corresponding strength class.
The result is fast, objective strength grading with performance comparable to mechanical grading systems and significantly greater consistency than visual grading alone.
